The Poetry of Dylan Thomas and Gottfried Benn: Exploring the nature of life and death through metaphor

Abstract

KISA ÖZET Bu çalışmanın amacı İngiliz şair Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) ile Alman şair Gottfried Benn'in (1886-1956) şiirlerini kullanılan dil ve metaforlar açısından incelemek ve aralarındaki benzerliği ortaya koymaktır. Her iki şair de zamanın akışının kişiyi gitgide ölüme yaklaştırdığı gerçeğinden rahatsızlık duymaktadır ve şiirlerinde ölüme karşı koyma, en azından ölüm korkusunu azaltma isteği sezilmektedir. Şiirlerin bir çoğunda su ve ışık yaşamı, kuruluk ve karanlık ise ölümü simgeleyen metaforlar olarak karşımıza çıkar. Gün ve gecenin, ayrıca dört mevsimin sürekli birbirini izlediği gerçeğinden ve yaşamın suda başlayıp yine suda bittiği düşüncesinden yola çıkarak, yaşamın kendini sürekli yenileyen bir döngü olduğu sonucuna varırlar'ki bu da onların erişmek istediği yeniden doğuşu ve ölümsüzlüğü müjdeler.

ABSTRACT This study aims at showing the parallelism between the poems of the English poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1954) and those of the German poet Gottfried Benn (18B6-1956) with respect to their way of employing language and metaphor. Both poets are deeply concerned with the idea of the passing of time which ultimately leads to death and through their poetry they attempt to' challenge death or at least to overcome their anxiety over death. In their poems the imagery of water and light serve as metaphors for life whereas dryness and darkness are used as metaphors for death. The poets` idea of a cyclical process of life as manifested in the constant alternation of day and night and of the seasons as well as in water's being at once the source and the end of life indicates the possibility of rebirth and immortality which the two poets wish to attain.
