dc.description.abstract | iv ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to determine the origins of economic, social and political crisis which was experienced on the eve of 12 September 1980 military intervention in Turkey and to test the explanatory power of Guillermo 0' Doneli' s theory of Bureaucratic Authoritarianism in the Turkish case. The parts intended to serve this purpose are as follows: The first part consists of a detailed expoosition of the theory of Bureaucratic Authoritarianism, including the contributions by its major Latin American proponents. The second part is devoted to the Turkish version of the theory formulated by Korkut Boratav. The third part deals with the partial application of the theory to the 1963-1980 period in Turkey; the application is partial in three respects: first, it will be limited to critical comparison of a set of data from the 1963- 1980 period in Turkey with theory's propositions and predictions that exclusively characterize `populism` and `the crisis of populism` ; secondly, only a selected set of data will be addressed in the application; hence, thirdly, not all of the propositions and hypothesis on the nature of `populism`, but only selected group of them -- those that relevant to the data at hand-- will be discussed. The last part is devoted to conclusions. | en_US |
