A Narrative analysis of the construction of self in a group of Turkish university undergraduates: A self amidst tradition and change

Abstract

ÖZET Bir Grup Üniversite Öğrencisinde Ben Yapısının Anlatım Analizi Metoduyla Çözümlenmesi: Gelenek ve Değişim arasındaki Ben Kevser Banu Seçkin Bu çalışma Türk kültürü içinde benin, tabiatı ve işleyişi gibi yönlerden tarihsel ve psikososyal bir kavram olarak nasıl ifade bulduğu üzerinedir. Bu çabada Roland'ın (1988) teorik yaklaşımı kullanılmıştır. Bu yaklaşım benin yapısının organizasyonunun ailesel benlik, boyutları ve bu alanda görülen hiyerarşik ilişkilerle beraber, özel benlik, manevi benlik ve genişleyen benlik diye adlandırılan dört temel alandan oluştuğunu öne sürer. Bu çalışma Boğaziçi Üniversitesinden altısı kız altısı erkek olmak üzere on iki üçüncü sınıf öğrencisinin katkılarıyla gerçekleştirildi. Bu kişilerle yan yapılandırılmış bir konu rehberi ışığında derinlemesine görüşmeler yapıldı. Bu görüşmelerden elde edilen bilgiler kal itatif araştırma metodlarından biri olan anlatım analizi yöntemi uygulanarak değerlendirildi. Bu değerlendirmelerin sonucunda araştırmacının beklentilerinin aşağıda belirtilen şekilde desteklendiği görüldü. Katılımcıların ben yapılarının toplulukçu, karşılıklı bağımlılık içeren bir yapılanma sergilediği ve modernleşme, Batılılaşma etkilerinin bu yapı içinde eritilip sindirildiği görüldü. Katılımcıların ben yapılarının değerlendirmesinde Roland' in öne sürdüğü ben kavramlaştırmasının da tüm alan ve boyutlarıyla anlamlı bir teorik yaklaşım oluşturduğu saptandı. Kız erkek farklılıktan sadece bazı boyut ve alanların yine bazı yönlerinde ortaya çıktı. Ayrıca vııaraştırmacının beklentisine uygun olarak ailesel benlik yapısının, içindeki genişleyen benlik alanının katılımcıların ben yapılarının organizasyonunda oldukça belirliyici bir yere sahip olduğu görüldü. vıu

ABSTRACT A Narrative Analysis of the Construction of Self in a Group of Turkish University Undergraduates: A Self amidst Tradition and Change by Kevser Banu Seçkin The present study aimed to delineate the concept ofseif, its nature, function, and operation as a psycho-socio-historical construction, as expressed in Turkish culture. In this attempt, Roland's (1988) theoretical approach was used. Roland's theoretical framework on the structuralization of self involves a familial self together with its dimensions and the hierarchical relations displayed within this area, private self, spiritual self, and the expanding self as the main organizations of self. The study was carried out with the participation of twelve third year students, six females and six males, from Boğaziçi University. The responses obtained from the in depth interviews with the participants in line with the semi structured topic guide were evaluated by applying narrative analysis, a qualitative research methodology. The results of the study supported the researcher's expectations as follows. The self constructions of the participants displayed a collectivistic interdependent construal. The strong influence of modernization and Westernization movements were seen to be processed within this self construction. Roland's theoretical framework on the structuralization of self with its main areas and dimensionsemerged in the self construction of the participants as meaningful theoretical constructs. The balance of the psychosocial dimensions and the contents of the areas in the organization of self revealed the unique aspects of the Turkish culture. Male female differences were seen at only a few points, which does not point to different self constructions based on gender. Also, within the framework of a familial self construction, an emphasized expanding self was seen as expected. VI
