Abstract

KISA ÖZET Akabi Hikayesi, Boşboğaz Bir Adem ve Temaşa-i Dünya Romanları Çerçevesinde 19. Yüzyıl Osmanlı Modernleşmesi Selin Tımçboyacı Tanzimat Fermanı'nın ilanıyla resmiyet kazanan Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun modernleşme süreci, imparatorluğun gayr-i müslim cemaatleri arasında büyük bir kültürel canlanma, hareketlenme yaşanmasına sebep olmuştur. Bu dönemde Batı edebiyatından çok sayıda çeviri yapıldığını, basımevleri kurulup, Türkçe-Ermenice ya da Türkçe-Rumca olarak iki dilde gazeteler çıkartıldığını görüyoruz. Vartan Paşa ve Misailidis Efendi dönemin idealleri ve heyecanlan doğrultusunda, Ermeni ve Grek alfabelerini kullanarak imparatorluktaki ilk Türkçe romanları yazdılar. Bu çalışmada söz konusu üç roman, 19. yüzyıl Osmanlı modernleşmesinin etkileri dikkate alınarak okunmakta, tahlil edilmektedir. Tezin ilk bölümü Osmanlı modernleşmesine ve imparatorluğu bu sürece götüren sebeplere, ikinci bölüm ise romanların 19. yüzyılın dinamikleri gözönünde bulundurularak okunmasına ayrılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, talihsiz bir aidiyet meselesiyle karşı karşrya bulunan, ne Türk ne de Ermeni edebiyatı içinde sayılan iki roman ile Karamanlı edebiyatı ile birlikte kaybolmuş Temaşa-i Dünya ve Cefakâr ü Cefakeşin dönemin özelliklerini yansıtmaları, Türkçe olarak, imparatorluğun vatandaşları tarafindan yazılmış olmaları sebebiyle Tanzimat dönemi Türkçe edebiyatı içinde görülmesi gerektiği savunulmuştur. ABSTRACT Modernisation of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th Century In Respect to the Novels: Akabi Hikayesi, Boşboğaz Bir Adem and Temaşa-i Dünya by Selin Tunçboyacı Modernisation of the Ottoman Empire in 19th century, which became official by the decleration of the Tanzimat Edict, aroused a cultural movement among the non-Muslim communities. We note that numerous translations had been made from the Western literature, publishing houses established, bilingual newspapers in Turkish- Armenian or Turkish-Greek published within that communities during the Tanzimat period. Vartan Paşa and Misailidis Efendi who shared the ideals of that period, wrote the very first novels of the empire. Like the other non-Muslim writers whose first language was Turkish, both writers wrote in Turkish using the Armenian or the Greek alphabet. The novels that are subject to this thesis, are analyzed thru the very effects of the modernisation process. The first chapter of the thesis is devoted to the modernisation process of the empire, its dynamics and the reasons that brought the administration to declare the Tanzimat Edict. In the second chapter, the novels are analyzed in respect to their relation with the modernisation process. Reading thru the novels, we face an unfortunate identification dilemma: Because Akabi Hikayesi and Boşboğaz Bir Adem were written in Turkish, they are rarely recognized as the part of Armenian literature. Yet the fact that they were written in Armenian alphabet, makes them inappropriate for Turkish literature. The Karaman literature, which was the most flourishing literature during the Tanzimat period, had been demolished by the end of the century. This thesis argues that three of the novels should be considered as part of Tanzimat period Turkish literature for they reflect the characteristics of the period, were written in Turkish by the very members of the Ottoman Empire. in
