De-/Re- contextualising simultaneous interpreting: Interpreters in the ivory tower

Abstract

Eşzamanlı Çeviri Araştırmaları ağırlıklı olarak bilişsel ve nöro-dilbilimsel paradigmalarca yönlendirilmiş dolayısıyla konferans çevirmenine, sosyal, ideolojik ve iletişimsel bağlamlarda görev yapan bir profesyonel olarak yaklaşılmamış ve bu bağlamlarla eşzamanlı çeviri performansı arasındaki ilişki irdelenmemiştir. Ebru Diriker'in `De-/Re-Contextualising Simultaneous Interpreting: Interpreters in the Ivory Tower?` başlıklı tezi ise, eşzamanlı çeviriyi belirli bir 'bağlama oturtmayı' amaçlamakta ve bu amaçla öncelikle, konferans çevirmenin etrafındaki geniş sosyo kültürel ve ideolojik bağlamı temsilen konferans çevirmenliğinin üst-söylemde nasıl betimlendiğini incelemektedir. Genel olarak, konferans çevirmeni, konuşmacının kastettiği anlamı tam, şeffaf ve anlamı biçimlendirme sürecine taraf olmadan aktaran profesyonel olarak sunulmaktır. Çalışmanın ikinci kısmında ise, gerçek bir konferans bağlamında çevirmenlerin performansı ve `çevrilen sözün1 doğası irdelenmektedir. Ortaya çıkan sonuçlar, üst-söylemdeki pek çok varsayımı doğrulamamakta ve genel kanının aksine, çevirmenlerin özgün konuşmada varolduğu düşünülen 'içkin' anlamı değil, sosyal bağlam ve koşullara göre oluşturdukları anlamı aktardığına, 'çeviri'nin yalnız özgün konuşmacıyı değil, çevirmen tarafından temsil edilen birden fazla konuşmacıyı barındırdığına, konuşmacının birinci tekil kullanımıyla özdeşleşmenin çevirmen açısından gerginliklerle dolu, çevirmeni kırılgan bir konuma sokan ama aynı zamanda da güçlü kılan bir süreç olduğuna işaret etmektedir. Çalışma, ayrıca, eşzamanlı çeviri üst-söyleminin mitler banndırdığını ve bunu bir amaç için yaptığını iddia etmekte, sözlü çeviri yazınının bazı temel varsayımlarının gözden geçirilmesi gerektiğini vurgulamakta ve eşzamanlı çevirinin Tjağlam içinde gerçekleşen bir etkinlik' olarak ele alınması için çağrıda bulunmaktadır.

Research has been dominated by cognitive and neuro- linguistic paradigms with little attention devoted to the simultaneous interpreter as a professional working in social, ideological and interactional contexts and to the interdependency between these contexts and actual SI performance. Different from the mainstream approach, Ebru Duiker's `De-/Re-Contextualising Simultaneous Interpreting: Interpreters in the Ivory Tower?` sets out to 'contextualise' SI behaviour. The first part focuses on the broader socio-cuitural context around SI by exploring the (re)presentation of the professional) in the meta-discourse which suggests that in the general discourse interpreters are pre-dominantly (represented as professionals capable of identifying with the speaker and transferring the meanings intended by them completely, fluently and without becoming personally involved in shaping the 'meaning1. As against this background, the second part explores the performance of interpreters and the nature of the interpreted utterance within the context of an actual conference. The findings challenge many of the widely held assumptions regarding SI and suggest that simultaneous interpreters do not render the meaning assumed to exist in the original but negotiate a meaning in context, their 'delivery' does not only represent the speaker but a multiplicity of speaker-positions and identifying with the speaker's 1st person does not come naturally but creates a source of tension, vulnerability and strength for the interpreter. The findings also point to the mythical and purposeful nature of the meta-discourse, underscore the need to revise some of the basic assumptions in SI literature and call for a more concerted approach to analysing actual SI behaviour as a 'situated action'.
