Locally produced painted pottery of Tarsus-Gözlükule: The Late Bronze to Iron age transition

Abstract

Kısa özet Tarsus-Gözlükuie'nln Yerel Üretim Boyalı Çanak Çömleği: Geç Tunç - Demir Çağı Geçiş Dönemi Elif Ünlü Bugünkü Tarsus şehri Çukurova'yı İç Anadolu Platosu'na Toros Dağlan arasından bağlayan Gülek Boğazı'nın girişinde yer almaktadır. Coğrafi konumunun stratejik olarak önemi ve bir ticari merkez olması dolayısıyla Tarsus-Gözfükule Neolithic dönemden itibaren günümüze değin devamlı olarak yerleşilmiştir. Tarsus-Gözlükule Hetty Goldman'ın idare ettiği bir Amerikalı takım tarafından 1934-1939 ve 1947-1949 yıllan arasında kazılmıştır. Bu araştırmada Tarsus-Gözlükule'nin GeçTunç'tan Demir Çağı'na Geçiş Dönemi yerel üretim boyalı çanak çömleği incelenmektedir. Kullanılan malzeme eski kazılarda ortaya çıkanlmış ve Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Araştırma ve Kazı Projesi dahilinde geçtiğimiz yıllarda tekrar temizlenip, kaydedilmiştir. Geç Tunç'tan Demir Çağı'na Geçiş Dönemi Ön Asya arkeolojisinde en çok tartışılan konulardan biridir. Eski Tarsus kazılanndan çıkan malzeme civardaki birçok yerleşim için büyük önem taşıdığından bu döneme ait çanak çömleğin tekrar incelenmesinde yarar vardır. Bu çalışmanın amacı sadece vibu bölgede değil, bütün eskiçağ doğu Akdeniz havzasındaki Geç Tunç'tan Demir Çağı'na geçiş dönemine daha iyi ışık tutabilmektir. Söz konusu Geçiş Dönemi çanak çömleğinde güçlü bir Miken etkisi yanı sıra yerel geleneklerin devamı da gözlenmiştir. Abstract Locally Produced Painted Pottery of Tarsus-GözSükule: The Late Bronze to Iron Age Transition By Elif Ünlü The modern city of Tarsus is located at the entrance of the Cllician Gates, one of the most important routes connecting the Cilician Plain with the Central Anatolian Plateau through the formidable Taurus Mountains. By its strategically important geographic position and by being a viable trading center, Tarsus-Gözlükule has been an important center that was settled continuously from Neolithic to present. Tarsus-Gözlükule was excavated by an American excavation team, headed by Hetty Goldman, between the years 1934-1939 and 1947-1949. In this study the Late Bronze to Iron Age Transitional Period local painted pottery of Tarsus-Gözlükule is investigated. The material examined was unearthed by the former excavators and was cleaned and recorded again as part of the Boğaziçi University Tarsus-Gözlükule Research and Excavation Project in the last three years. The Late Bronze to Iron Age transition in the Near East is one of the most debated periods in archaeology. Hence, it is essential to reevaluate the ivpottery belonging to the end of Late Bronze Age and beginning of the Early Iron Age of Tarsus with the aim that it will bring a better understanding of the era in question not only for the Cilician region, but for the whole ancient eastern Mediterranean world. The analysis of the pottery of this Transitional Period showed a strong Mycenean influence along with persistence of local traditions. But also a new element can be observed tiiat can possibly be tied to inland western Anatolian or Syrian region.
