J. R. R. Tolkein: The scholar as fiction writer

Abstract

ÖZET J.R.R. Tolkien'in eserleri, özellikle de başlıca eseri Yüzüklerin Efendisi, yazarın akademisyen kimliğini ve bilimsel ilgi alanlarını büyük ölçüde yansıtmaktadır. Eski ve ortaçağ İngiliz edebiyatı alanındaki çalışmaları ile tanınmış bir Oxford profesörü olan Tolkien, özellikle eski çağ destanı Beowulf ve ortaçağ İngiliz romansı Sir Gawain and the Green Knight üzerine yaptığı çalışmaları ile öne çıktı. Yazarın akademik hayatında önemli yer tutan bu iki eserin temel alındığı bu çalışmada Tolkien'in kendi eserlerine bilimsel kimliğini ne ölçüde yansıttığı araştırılmaktadır. Tolkien Beowulf destanına getirdiği yorumda, eserin bir ağıtsal kahramanlık şiiri olduğunu vurgular. Tolkien' e göre Beowulf destanı insanoğlunun kötü ile savaşını esas almaktadır ve bu savaş mutlak ve kaçınılmaz yenilgi ile bitecektir. Cermen mitolojisinin ayrılmaz unsuru olan 'cesaret' kavramı Yüzüklerin Efendisi' nde de işlenmektedir, kahramanlar doğa üstü yaratıklara karşı koymak durumundadırlar. Hobbitler, Beowulf ve Sir Gawain gibi örnek kahramanlar olmasalar da, en az onlar kadar cesur ve iradeli olabilirler. Tolkien bu üçü arasında bir ortak paydanın bulunduğu görüşündedir: ölüm korkusu altında hepsi insanca duygu ve korkular yaşar. Tolkien'in anlatım tekniği ortaçağ romanslannda uygulanan tekniği temel alır. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight ile yapılan karşılaştırmada anlatım yönteminin içeriği ne denli etkilediği ve nasıl ironiler yarattığını gösterir. ABSTRACT J.R.R. Tolkien's fiction, particularly his major work The Lord of the Rings, has been greatly influenced by his scholarship. Tolkien was an outstanding scholar of Old and medieval English literature who made substantial contributions to the study of the Old English heroic poem Beowulf and the medieval romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. These two works are taken as points of reference in investigating the influence of Tolkien's scholarship on his fiction. Tolkien's interpretation of Beowulf has redirected critical attention to the heroic-elegiac character of the poem which, according to Tolkien, is mainly concerned with man's struggle against evil and his inevitable overthrow in time. The concept of 'heroic courage' is an intrinsic aspect of Germanic mythology and as such constitutes a major motif in The Lord of the Rings where the heroes stand up courageously against supernatural foes. Beowulf and Sir Gawain are both ideal heroes but they are also human and fear for their lives in the face of great danger. Tolkien's heroes, on the other hand, are Hobbits and smaller in size than normal human beings, but they are not less courageous than the traditional heroes. Tolkien's narrative technique, 'interlace' is reminiscent of the technique employed in romance. A comparison with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight shows how the narrative style reinforces the content and creates ironies. Tolkien's language reflects most clearly the influence of his academic learning on his fiction. But although Tolkien aspired to emulate the ancient and medieval poets, he went beyond mere pastiche and created a heroic-fantasy which carries contemporary meanings. IV
