Between Dominicans and Palamites: Pro-latin intellectuals in fourteenth-century Byzantium

Abstract

Ondördüncü yüzyılın başlarında Bizans İmparatorluğu'nun bilimsel geleneğinde klasik felsefe, Latin teolojisi ve skolastik düşünceye yönelik çalışmalara dair yeni bir ilgi doğdu. Bu Batı yanlısı eğilim, ileriki yıllarda Latin taraftarı akımın lideri konumuna gelen, VI. İoannes Kantakuzenos yönetiminin üst düzey yetkililerinden, Demetrios Kydones ve Dominiken Tarikatı arasında gelişen düşünsel yakınlık sonucu başladı ve küçük bir entellektüel grup arasında dini ve felsefi bir akıma dönüştü. Ancak, bu Latin yanlısı hareketin ortaya çıkışı eski bir mistik düşünce akımı olan Hezikazm hareketinin yeniden doğuşuyla çakıştı. Hesikazm hareketinin lideri olan Gregory Palamas Latin yanlısı Bizanslı entellektüellerin bilim ve din hakkındaki düşüncelerine karşıydı. Bu durum iki grup arasında siyasi ve sosyal çatışmalara sebep oldu.Bu çalışma ondördüncü yüzyıl Bizans'ında ortaya çıkan Latin taraftarlığının temel özelliklerini, bu grubun dönemin sosyal ve politik gerçekleri karşısındaki tutumunu inceleyerek ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu tezin temel savı ise ondördüncü yüzyılda Hesikazm hareketinin giderek artan sosyal ve politik gücünün ve baskısının Latin yanlısı aydınların bu konudaki düşüncelerini vurgulayarak, onları Bizans toplumundan uzaklaştırıp, marjinalize ettiğidir.

The Byzantine scholarly tradition of the fourteenth century saw a revival of enthusiasm for the study of classical philosophy and a new interest in Latin theology and scholasticism. This pro-Western tendency began with Demetrios Kydones, the prime minister of John VI Kantakuzenos, who became the leader of the pro-Latin movement which was characterized by a scholarly zeal and a particular religious position. It was the intellectual contact of Demetrios Kydones with the Friars of the Dominican Order in Pera that initiated a fundamental religious and philosophical current among a small group of Byzantine scholars. The emergence of this movement coincided with the resurgence of Hesychasm, a rooted mystical current of thought which was revived by Gregory Palamas. The Athonite monk opposed the scholarly and religious position of the pro-Latin intellectuals, creating a political and social clash between the two groups.This work aims at examining the establishment and the different characteristics of a common social ethos within the pro-Latin movement, by investigating the relationship of the pro-Latin group to the contemporary realities of fourteenth-century Byzantium. This thesis argues that the scholarly and political opposition of the Palamite faction, which gradually dominated the intellectual scene of Byzantium during the fourteenth century, accentuated certain characteristics of their pro-Latin position, pushing the pro-Latin intellectuals to the margins of Byzantine society.
