dc.description.abstract | IN VITRO DETERMINATION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OFMETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF Mentha pulegium L. and Salvia tomentosa MillerF ra E Y Ğ Teyt R İ İChemistry Department, Post Gradute Thesis, 68 pg, 2006Key Words: Antioxidant activity, DPPH, Mentha pulegium L. , Salvia tomentosa MillerIn this study, the antioxidant activity of methanol extracts of Mentha pulegium L. andSalvia tomentosa (Miller) was studied. The antioxidant activity was investigated withfu d f et e ost βor ie n m t d:h -carotene bleaching test, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazylfr h e ?(DPPH) radical scavenging method, reducing power and total phenolic. The extracts oftwo plants exhibited strong total antioxidant activity. At the concentrations of 2 gL-1,methanolic extracts of M. pulegium and S. tomentosa showed 71.83% and 75.00%inhibition on lipid peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion, respectively. Comparable, 2gL-1 of standard antioxidant, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), exhibited 95.96%inhibition on peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion. The extracts of M. pulegium and S.tomentosa had effective reductive potential and free radical scavenging at all testedamounts (0.04, 0.10, 0.2 and 0.4 mg/L).
