Y : Our study was prepared between October 1994 and May1995. Fifty patients suffering from chronic plaque type psoriasis who admitted to Dermatology polyclinic of Ministry of health Ankara hospital and fifty healthy volunteers matching in sex and age with the patients participated in the study. The patients have been diagnosed by clinicopathologic criteria. Specimens for conjunctiva impression cytology were obtained from the superior bulbar conjunctiva of both eyes of each subject in the similar method that Egbert has described. The specimens were examined on the basis of Nelson's classification of squamous metaplasia and results were statistically analyzed. The cytological features of the psoriatics compared with the control subjects revealed that squamous metaplastic changes were pronounced in the psoriatic group regardless of the duration and the severity of the disease. Besides significantly much more neutrophils and snake-like chromatin were present in the patients' specimens. The result of our study indicates that the patient with psoriasis has an asymptomatic conjunctival psoriatic involvement so that all psoriatic patients should be examined for the possible ophthalmologic manifestations. Since impression cytology is a simple, non-invasive, repeatable method as a reliable indicator of the health of the ocular surface, it may be performed in psoriatic patients to follow up. 34en_US
