S- in Architecture Supervisors Inst, Gül Asatekin Hay 1988, 241 pages In Tur key j especially in Istanbul, there is an abundant stack of traditional houses to be preserved. Most of these buildings are modest houses. These buildings in the historical environment, after being classified in groups according to the decisions going back to 1970* s. a.rs now being restored. The main goal of one o-f these groups, the second group application, is to preserve the facades and heights of the buildings. In this thesis, first the reasons and criteria of classification of historical buildings, and the decisions related to the topic &re presented. Then a sample of second group examples in Istanbul are investigated in detail in terras of structural properties and interventions. It is found that assorted types of buildings are renewed through different interventions» The second group applications &re interpreted and criticized in terms of restoration principles and values of traditional houses.
