Time and modernity in Turkish context: Clock towers, squares and public sphere in the case of Yozgat

Abstract

Yozgat şehri verilerine dayanarak, bu çalışma Türk modernleşmesi sürecinde kentsel mekan ve mimarlığı birer araç olarak kullanıp, çağdaş zamanı ve çağdaş yaşam biçimini Türkiye bağlamında kurgulayan saat kulesi ve kamusal alan ilişkisini incelemektedir. Türk kamusal alanının üretilmesi sosyal bir süreç olarak irdelenmiş ve Türk modernleşmesinin mekansal organizasyonu bu sürecin en önemli parçası olarak düşünülmüştür. Çalışmanın merkezinde ise, bu süreç içinde kentsel mekanın mimari bir elemanı olan ve on dokuzuncu yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren yapımlarına başlanan, toplumun her anlamda modernleşmesi ve kentsel mekanın batılı bir görünüm kazanması için bir araç, bir simge olarak kullanılan saat kuleleri vardır Anahtar Kelimeler: Yozgat, Zaman, Saat Kulesi, Kamusal Alan, Batılılaşma, Türk Modernleşmesi, Türk Kamusal Alanı, Yozgat Saat Kulesi

Deriving from the case of Yozgat, this thesis examines the relationship between the clock tower and the public sphere in Turkish context as one of the important aspects to construct not only modem time but also modem life by using the urban space and architecture in the context of modernization of Turkish society. The production of Turkish public sphere is considered as a social process in which the spatial organization of Turkish modernization is rendered as the most important component of it. In the scope of thesis, clock towers, begun to be constructed in the second half of the Nineteenth Century as an architectural element of the urban space, which were used as a tool, symbol to modernize the society in every sense in this process, were taken part.
