dc.description.abstract64 is especially prominent in developing countries such as Turkey. In developing countries, ruling class tries to disseminate their ideology by mass media and by sports. The masses discuss about sports activities, of which the ruling class make use to passive them. It is possible to say that sports, being a social institution, can not be analysed without considering capitalist relations of production. Class in power possesses the means of production and it is also this class who possesses the places sports activities are held and who owns sports clubs. By using sports, the class in power not only manipulates and exploits others in society and also plays an important role in the process of shaping their identity.63 ABSTRACT Since his existence, mankind has been engaged in physical activities. Those activities, being individual activities at first, are carried into public sphere in accordance with the level of civilisation of societies. Today, wen we say `sports`, we understand certain activities performed in front of a mass (audience). And people are informed about those activities by mass media. We can learn about the activities performed anywhere around the world,`a small modern village` as McLuhan qualifies. That the expansion of those activities and people's rising interest in them cause individuals to socialise. Today, watching the activities and talking or reading about them is concerned as a value which is accepted and shared by society. Values of sports that individuals have learnt and absorbed beginning from childhood are effective in having an identity in the process of socialization. So, in a sense, individuals express themselves in the groups by the teams they support or by the symbol of that team. It is possible to say that, in the process of having an identity, the values of sports are important as well as the other factors.
