The girls graduated from the primary education, who didn't have access to the secondary education in 2011-2012 years in metropolitan districts of Mersin participated this study. In this study, interview method was used. The interview form used as data collecting was developed by the researcher depending on the review the literature. The interview form, includes 26 questions related to dimensions such as barriers originated from family, school, social-culture, which how per girl's access to secondary education. The interview form was administered on sample group consisting of 26 girls who completed primary education but did not enroll to secondary education in Akdeniz (14 participants), in Toroslar (7 participants) and Yenişehir (5 participants), the Central districts of Mersin. The interviews have been recorded on tapes by getting the permission from the participants. The recorded interviews were transcribed and content analyses were carried out.According to the results of the analysis, the barriers preventing the girls from attending the secondary education such as `barriers based on family characteristics`, `barriers based on sex`, `barriers based on student characteristics`, `barriers based on school characteristics` and `barriers based on social environment` were determined as five themes.As the results of the research, social and economic incapabilities of families, the negative attitudes towards education, traditional gender streotypes relating the girls, the low academic achievement levels of the students, negative relationship between the peers and teachers, inadequacy of the school materials, attitudes of social environment against the girls's education have been observed.Key words: the schooling of girls, secondary education, barriers of on access to secondary education, gender inequalityen_US
