dc.description.abstract-46- SUMMARY The Place of Carpets of HereKe in Turkish Hand-Woven Carpets : Carpets of Hereke : An establishment was set up to manufacture clothes for curtaxn and upholstery, but it was registered for Sultan Abdülmecit and began producing silk goods for the palace. In tne year of 1891 carpet masters were brought from Gördes and Demirci and carpet woving looms were i set up, and tne woving ot the first Hereke carpet was begun. The oldest are preserved and samples of those precious carpets exhibited in Museum of Ancient works, Dolmabahçe Palace, Topkapi Museum, Yxldxz Palace and Küçüksu Mansion. The reason' of coming into lite or Hereke Carpetry is the need of Ottoman Palares to a special type of Carpetry. The wool and silk carpets, which -were woven for the palace, are reflecting a special design under standing.Hereke Carpets were, with a classical attiaude, given the name of the place where they were:woven, and they have entered carpet literature with this name, there are 36 knots per cm2 in wool carpets and, 100 knots per cm2 in silk carpets. The ornaments that were used in the woven carpets are tulip, hyacinth, ° Ha tay i a special ornament designed with t lowers, Rumi again a special ornament designed with plowers, leaves i having the sight of a khanjar. The raw materials used are pare wool in wool r carpets, pure silk and golden wire in silk carpets. Some of the names of very special silk and wool Hereke Carpets are Flower of seven Mountains (Yedi Dağın çiçeği), Sultanahmet Çeşmibülbül, one-thousand-one flower (Bin- i birçiçekj, Now-ar*days, the manufacturing of wool and silk Hereke Carpets are of a high rate and it is Known that most of the manufactured carpets are exported to various countries of the world.
