dc.description.abstract | Ill SUMMARY The Prehistoric Ages, forming many periods of unrecor ded history, is the longest era of civilization. Its beginning is traced by the oldest work of art left remaining from first man and its end is marked by the invention of handwriting. As the human hand became dextrous at forming objects and tools, wall drawings and later female figurines emerged as the first works of art. In general, these statues' bodies are out of proportion. Many of them are headless (those with heads are faceless) and their hips, breatsts and reproductive or gans are exaggerated. These statuettes, named VENUS by archeologists and art historians alike, represent fertility. The discovery of these statuettes, characterized as IDOLS in short, is evidence that men began to envision their god to have human form and not as fire, water, mountain, river, bull or deer. Due to its geographic location, Anatolia has been a mel ting pot for many millennium. For this reason it has borne greatly the development of civilization and the arts. The Mother Goddess figure, which is the symbol of ferti lity, is a very important object and concept found in all parts of Anatolia. These extremely beautiful works of art were left as gifts at sacred places and at tombs. The progress we make in our creation of art works is greatly dependent to our cultural background and the environ ment in which we live. Inevitably, for all artists who are aware of this Anatolian culture which bears the accumulation and traces of all the civilizations that have lived in it, Anatolia is an infinite source of creativity. | en_US |
