dc.description.abstract | SUMMARY İznik and Kütahya are the oldest major sites of Ottoman-Turkish tile and seramic art in Anatolia. Its known that the production activities in both sites have standed as early as the 1 3 th century. However, the secondary role that Kütahya has assumed relative to İznik led to controversies about the starting date of production in Kütahya. Many pieces, although providing some evidence of having been produced in Kütahya, are attributed to İznik due to inconclusive findings. Thus, issues such as the origins of many tiles and seramics constitute credible reasons for detailed research about Kütahya. Based on the existing literature, it can be concluded that the production of tiles and seramics in Kütahya has started concurrently with that in İznik and continued upto the present although the production in İznik had ceased in the 17 th century. The argument that Kütahya's significance in tile and seramics production has been undermined due to the cessation of production in the 16 th century is not valid anymore. These exists strong evidence that a group of blue-white seramics, has been produced in Kütahya in the 16 thcentury. Kütahya has continued to produce along with İznik in the 16 th century which was the heyday of tile and seramic art. In the 18 th century, Kütahya has developed a style of its own which was dominated by a free-brush technique. The variety and the high quality of this century's products have also encouraged customşzed production and export activities. Nevertheless, in the second half of the 18 th century, the quality of the products has substantially a deteriorated which resulted in the production of less refined pieces. 40 | en_US |
