dc.description.abstract- 130 - THE THEME OF SEARCH FOR IDENTITY IN HOUSE HADE OF DAWN AND INVISIBLE MAN The present study will focus on the theme of search for identity in N.Scott Momaday's Ho us e Made o f Dawn and Ralph Ellison's Invis ib le Man which in my opinion are examplary of Amer i can- Indian and Afro-American novels deli neating the theme of search for identity after theTI. World War. This theme in Hous e Made of Dawn and Invis ib le Man indicates Ellison's and Momaday's wishes to express the reac tion of American-Indian and Afro-American people to the encroaching of the cultural values of the main stream on their own cultural values thus ignoring their racial identity The leader of the civil rights struggles in the history of the U.S.A. has actually been the Afro-American people and we can say that American Indians have rather been passive in this field. Throughout American history, the focus of the relationship of American-Indians with White Americans has been their reaction to ambivalent attitudes of the federal governments towards legally guaranteed sovereignty of Amer ican- Indians on their lands. Until the II. World War, American-Indians basically lived on reservations and weren't closely in touch with White Americans except with thoseen_US
