dc.description.abstract | Morphological changes seen in small intestinal mucosae of the rats treated with oral contraceptive (OCA) were investigated at the light and e 1 ectronmicroscopical level. For- this purpose, the rats were given various doses during 4,8 and 12 weeks. The degree of efectiveness of the small intestinal (duode num, jejenum, ileum) mucosae were evaluated in groups and compa red with the control groups. The group given both 2 doses for 4 weeks: In this group degenerative structures which were evident as the dose increased were seen in the villus epithelium. Those were the epithelial cell exfoliation, degenaration in the mitochondria and an incre ase in the lysosomes of the absorptive cells. Cellula calicifor- mis as the most affected cell in this study, were observed with decreasing mucous secretion. Paneth cells, rich in their secreti on granules, were quite similar to the control groups. The secre tion mechanism of the enterochromaf f in cells (EC )were seen af- facted in the storage phase. The group given both 2 doses during 8 weeks: In this group, degenerations of the villus structure of the small intesti nal mucosa were quite evident. Epithelial cell exfoliation and ruptures were increased as the dose increased. In the absorp tive cells, some dilatations in the cell junctions, swollen and indistinct cristae of the mitochondria were observed in this gro up. The absorptive v cells with dark cytoplasm were suggested as exhausted cells. Another interesting finding was a decrease in the content of the cellula cal icif ormis. During the secretion phase, paneth cell's were seen highly affected. EC cells, in their secretion phase were frequently encountered.26 The group giveYı both two doses during 12 weeks: In -this group, the damage in the villus epithelium was seen continued. Lateral junctions of the absorptive cells were dilated and mikro- villi structures, at the apical face, were seen highly damaged. Among the cell organelles, the mitochondria with their swollen and degenerated cristas, the dilated endoplasmic reticulum and an increase in the vacuoles were quite evident. Lysosomal structures in various types were encountered in the cells. As the absorptive cells were observed as darkcytoplasm cells, it was thought that those cells would be possibly degenerated. Cellula caliciformis were seen decreased both in number and in their mucous content. Paneth cells were frequently observed in the secretion phase, with empty granules. EC cells were filled with secretion granules and most of their mitochondria cristae were highly swollen. Their lysosomes were seen increased in number. Those findings implied that those cells were almost degenerated. At all the experiments, another common finding were an increase in the lymphocyt infiltration and constant mitotic activity of the epithelial cells. As a result, it was concluded that the degenerati ves changes in the smal 1 intestinal mucosae, due to OCA, disappeared when the pill was ceased. | |
