dc.description.abstractÇalışmamızda, provitamin A olan karotenoidlerin ak ciğer kanserine karşı muhtemel koruyucu etkisini inceleme ye karar verdik.
dc.description.abstract-32- -SULllARY- In our study we planned to investigate the probable preventive effect of carotenoids which are in fact provi tamin A against primary lung cancer. ?or this reason, we compared the serum carotenoid levels of the 17 people taken as a control group and 30 people with a primary lung cancer taken as a case greup in Heybeliada Pulmonary Diseases and Pulmonary Surgery Hospital* As a result we have found out thai the serum carote noid levels of people with primary lung Cancer were O.65+ 0»487 micg/ml; whereas the serum carotenoid levels of people in the control group were 1*37+0.59 micg/ml0 According to the biostatistical data we found the p value as a 0`013; since this p value was less than 0C05 we concluded that the difference obtained between the control and the case group was meaningful biostatistically. On the other hand the second interesting finding was the seasonal variance of the serum carotenoid levels of people with primary lung cancer; that is the serum carotenoid le vels- of patients during fall was found out to be less than the levels during winter time...Ve also studied the serum carotenoid levels of people smo king and not smoking in both the case and the control gro ups. In each group we cOiTipared the serum carotenoid levels of smokers according to the amount of cigarettes that they smoke; also we studied the serum karotenoid levels of nan- smokers in each group. At the end we found out no real bi ostatistically meaningful difference between the serum le vels of the carotenoids of the case and control groups ac cording to the smoking statu.en_US
