dc.description.abstract116 However, the observations we made during our survey and the results of our data have proved their expectations to be very appropriate and justified. Another result of our findings was that there is a great need for training more and better qualified personnel to work in the state rest homes and in the state controlled private institutions. This personnel should be patient, tolerant, affectionate, and self-sacrificing. Knowledge and ability should be the primary qualities required for appointing them to this duty. Old age is a natural phase which is anticipated in one's lifetime. To prolong this phase and to lead a life in compliance with the definition of the conception of `health` as given by WHO and to lead a happy life until the body is physiologically exhausted is accepted to be a matter included among the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.112 bireylerin % 76'sının ziyaretçileri vardı. % 69'unun geliri vardı. % 3 1 *i eko nomik güvenceden yoksundu. % 69'u kuruma ücret ödüyordu. % 5'i ölüm den korkuyordu. % 38'i kurum yaşamını benim seyememişti. 55.17 % had children, 51 % had brothers and sisters, 70 % had relatives. 15 % had been in the rest home for over a year. 52 % had been there for 1-5 years, 21 % for 6-10 years, 12 % had been there for over 10 years. 76 % of the aged people had visitors, 69 % had an income, 31 % had no economic security. 69 % paid a fee to the institution, 5 % were afraid of death, 54 % regarded death as a normal phenomenon, 32 % were tired of living, 9 % felt it would be better for them to die before becoming even older. 27 % were heavy smokers, 62 % were happy with the care the institution provided them, 30.65 % of those who felt this way, were scared of the life outside the institution and therefore they regarded the life at the institution as a happiness and as a stroke of luck. 38 % could not get adapted to the life at the institution and consequently were unhappy. 4 % of the aged subjects expected nothing from anybody nor from the health personnel. This was a normal pessimistic outlook for their age. 96 % expected affection, attention, respect, an amiable approach from the health personnel as they did from everybody else and also attenence to their illnesses. Apart from this,79 % of the aged subjecs expected affection, attention, respect and protection from the society and they wish not to be forgotten. 21 % did not expect anything from the society. They regarded society cooly as a result of the life they led. Those apart the 6 % of the aged individuals believed the state did not pay much importance to the aged, that the institutions and health teams were insufficient in quantity and quality and that the service rendered in this regard should be ameliorated as soon as possible. According to the results of our survey, it was observed that there is a decided difference in the conception of the aged-rest home, and the aged-relations between rest home personnel, as compared to the situation in this regard in the advanced countries. It was noted that the services rendered were insufficient and that the aged people were not happy, that they were restless and that they expected a lot of things from their families, the society and the state. Naturally it might be supposed that it is normal that people approaching the close of their lives are inclined to be pessimistic due to biological and functional changes.
