dc.description.abstract- 106 - SUMMARY 346 specimens taken with tuberculosis clinical diagnosis were examined in Laboratory of Tuberculosis of Mycology Department of Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. Ziehl-Neelsen and' fluorochrome techniques were performed for microscopic examination, whereas Bactec and Lowenstein-Jensen media were used for culture. The value of fluorochrome technique was discussed. 48 of 346 clinical specimens (13..8%)were found to be positive in culture. 20 (5.8%) of these positive cultures were found positive also by Ziehl-Neelsen, 24 (7%) by fluorochrome acid-fast stain. Smear/culture correlation was 41.6% with Ziehl-Neelsen and 50% with fluorochrome procedure. Bactec NAP differentiation test was applied for Mycobacterium strains and the strains were identified as M. tuberculosis complex (M. tuberculosis, M.bovis, M.africanum, M. microti) and MOTT bacilli. 42 (87.5%) of 48 isolates were identified as M. tuberculosis comp lex and 6 (12.5%) were as MOTT bacilli. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed also by Bactec technique to M. tuberculosis complex strains and 8. %, 95.2%, 92.8% of the strains were found susceptible to INH, etambutol and rifampin, streptomycin respectively. The ratio of multipl drug resistant (MDR) strains were detected as 7 %.en_US
