Y PATTERNS AND RISK FACTORS AMONG 0-1 AGE INFANTS IN A HOSPITAL SUMMARY : In this study, data from 616 hospitalised infants who died in the Paediatrics Ward of Istanbul Medical School Hospital during the period between 1990-1992, were collected and analysed to reveal the causes and the risk factors related with the (early-, late-prenatal and postnatal) mortality. Of the deaths occurred between 0-1 years of age, 42. 86% were found to turn up during the early prenatal period, 17.86% during late prenatal period and 39.28% during post natal period. Factors such as the previous abortions of the mother, prematurity, births with abnormal amniotic fluid findings, inadequacy of the health care received for the actual cau sative iliness, presence of asphyxia during the first seven days of live, were defined as the most significant risk fac tors associated with the early prenatal deaths, compared to late prenatal or postnatal deaths. The presence of jaundice or convulsions during the first week of life, were defined as the high risk factors for late prenatal mortality.Family history öf a previos child death, concenital abnormality or birth defect, were found to be the most notable risk factors concerning postnatal mortality. Characteristics that did not seem to be correlated with any of those infant mortality patterns were the maternal or paternal age, educational level of father, consanquinity, total number of pregnancy, births and living children, last birth interval »place of birth, type of birth, multiple pregnancy, Rh incompatibility, sex or birth weight of the baby, drug abuse or smoking habit of the mother. Leading causes of mortality were prematurity and other perinatal causes for neonatal deaths, and infectious diseases and congenital abnormalities for post neonatal deaths. The main identified causes of death during neonatal period were infectious diseases, perinatal causes.congenital hearth diseases, pneumonia and other abnormalities, consecu tively. consequently, infectious diseases, pneumonia, diarrhoea,. congenital hearth diseases and other abnormalities were encountered as the principal causes of post neonatal deaths. 340 words T.Q u.n.` ???IVf,IT.-, - -- ? ?, 1 `n7en_US
