dc.description.abstract
V is an epitheliotropic virus, predominantly associated with human skin and mucosal lesions. In many studdies the presence of HPV types 6/11, 16/18 and 31/33/51 have been demonstrated in oral benign, precancerous lesions and carcinomas. The purpose of our study is to find out the presence of HPV with in situ hybridization in these lesions. In the present study biopsy specimens and cytological material of twenty patients were used. Tissue specimens were obtained from patients receiving treatment in the Istanbul University, Faculty of Denstistry, Oral Surgery Department and Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine, Plastic and Recunstructive Surgery Department. All of the patients were investigated clinically, radiologically and histopathologicaliy. All biopsies were examined at the Istanbul University, Oncology Institute, Department of Tumor Pathology and Cytology. Seven of the twenty specimens were diagnosed as epidermoid carcinoma, seven as papilloma and six as lichen planus or leucoplakia histopathologicaliy. In situ hybridization technique was used to detect the presence of HPV types 6/11, 16/18 and 31/33/51 with Patho Gene DNA probe assay kit (Enzo Diagnostic, inc). The parafin sections and imprint slides were evaluated for the presence of mentioned HPV types, under light microscope. As a result, two of the seven specimens from patients with epidermoid carcinomas were positive for different HPV types. Four of the seven papilloma specimens and three of the six lichen planus and various HPV types. In conclusion it can be stated that the presence of HPV in the oral lesions may act synergistically with microtraumas, micro- organisms and chemical factors in the devolopment of malignancy.en_US
