dc.description.abstract | 174 SUMMARY In this paper we restrict the complex characters ot GL(4,q) down to SL(4,q) by using the character values for classes of GL(4,q). Using a version of Clifford's Theorem and making use of properties of roots of unity, we determine which restricted characters are irreducible, which of them are split and how many parts they split into irreducible com- 9 ponents. Thus, we determine some of the irreducible complex characters of SL(4,q) and degree of the conjugate irreducible components of all re ducible restricted characters.
