T Evaluation of Botulinum Toxin A Effectiveness in Functional Disc Displacement Patients The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects on pain and psychological status of patients with functional disc displacement following activity decrease caused by botulinum toxin A injections to masticatory muscles. 30 patients were allocated to this randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study, using RDC/TMD (Randomized Clinical Trials/Temporomandibular Disorders). All patients were informed about effects botulinum toxin A and required to give `Informed Consent`. Prior to injections, patients were asked to fill `Pain Questionnaire` to evaluate their pain and psychologic status, at the same appointment, also EMG of the right and left masseter and anterior temporal muscles were recorded. Saline to masseter and anterior temporal muscles of control group (n=15) and botulinum toxin A to study group is injected. At the 14th and 28th days patients were asked to refill `Pain Questionnaire` and EMG of muscles were recorded again. The difference between study and control groups at 14th and 28th days were statistically significant for pain and psychologic status. Botulinum toxin A injected study group showed improvement in pain and psychologic status. Although a decrease in the action potentials of masticatory muscles at 14th day was followed by an increase at 28th day; the reduction of pain scores and improvement in psychologic status continued at 28th day. Key words: Functional Disc Displacement, Botulinum Toxin A, EMG, RDC/TMD. Vlllen_US
