Abstract
Fly ashes, which come into existence after combustion process of coal in thermal power plants, have puzzolanic properties and they are mineral additive materials. When they used alone, they have no binding effect. But when they are added with cement into the fresh concrete mixture, they use the lime, which comes into existance after hydration of cement and they achieve binding characteristics. So they effect stability and durability of concrete. In this experimental study, class F fly ash and PC 42.5 cement were used. Concretes with fly ashes were produced according to the equal workability method. The aimed workability was 14-17 cm slump for the concretes produced. Their mechanical properties were analysed and the efficiency factor k depending on the compression strength was investigated.Witness concrete samples with 260 kg/m3, 320 kg/m3 and 400 kg/m3 cement doses were produced for the experiments. For each witness sample 6 series of concrete with fly ash were produced. Totally 21 series of concrete were produced. From 3 of these 6 series %10 of cement as weight was removed. From other 3 of these 6 series %17 of cement as weight was removed. Instead of removed cement fly ashes with three different ratios (1, 1.5 and 2 time of removed cement weight) were added. In 260 kg/m3 for %10 removal of cement 1.5, 2 and 2.5 time fly ash of removed cement weight were added. All the concrete samples with fly ash were produced according to the equal workability method. In each series 6 pieces of cubical samples (15x15x15 cm) and 6 pieces of cylinder samples (R=10cm h=20cm) were produced. Produced samples were kept in a tank with full of water 23±2 0C temperature. To determine the water ratios of all concretes pre-samples were produced. As fresh concrete experiments slump, fresh unit weight and air content of concrete were measured. As hard concrete experiments compression strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity and modulus of elasticity tests were applied on the specimens at the end of the curing period. Efficiency factor k were calculated according to the compression strength values of concrete. In conclusion; fly ashes have economically many advantages. They also decrease the water demand in concrete. Consequently the workability in concrete is improved. The compressive strength values especially in low fly ash used concretes are close to the witness samples during 28. days. Also it can be seen that their compressive strength values during 90. days are over the witness samples. The modulus of elasticity values in fly ash used concretes are close to the witness samples during 28. days. According to the ultrasonic pulse velocity values, fly ashes decrease the compasity of concrete.
