Abstract
Anahtar Kelimeler : Su kirliliği, pestisit, 2,4-D, Metribuzin, adsorpsiyon, aktif karbon, şeker pancarı küspesi In this dissertation the adsorption of 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid) and Metribuzin herbicides, present in wastewaters, on activated carbon produced from dried sugar beet pulp by heat activation and on commercial powdered activated carbon was comparatively investigated in a batch system. At the first part of the studies, different activated carbons were produced from dried sugar beet pulp at 650-750°C temperature range under nitrogen gas atmosphere applying various contact times. The one, which had the maximum adsorption capacity for both 2,4-D and Metribuzin was selected as working adsorbent. This activated carbon was used together with the commercial activated carbon in the experimental studies as adsorbent. At adsorption studies, firstly, the effect of initial pH on the equilibrium uptake of 2,4-D and Metribuzin for each adsorbent was investigated and for each adsorbent optimum working pH was determined as 2.0 for 2,4-D and as 4.0 for Metribuzin. The effect of temperature on the adsorption of 2,4-D and Metribuzin indicated that maximum adsorption capacities for each adsorbent were reached at 25°C for 2,4-D and at 45°C for Metribuzin. For each herbicide-adsorbent system it was observed that adsorption capacity increased and adsorption yield decreased with increasing initial herbicide concentration up to 300 mg/L. When the adsorbents are compared due to their adsorption capacities, it was seen that although the adsorption capacity of sugar beet pulp activated carbon was lower than that of commercial activated carbon, the sugar beet pulp activated carbon had a high adsorption capacity for both pollutants. Even it was observed that at low herbicide concentrations the adsorption yield of the beet pulp activated carbon approached to the yield of commercial activated carbon. At the last step of studies, the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were used to define the adsorption equilibrium of each herbicide-adsorbent sytem mathematically and model constants were obtained. In addition, first order and second order pseudo kinetic models were applied to kinetic data of adsorption and kinetic constants belonging to these models were found. For each herbicide-adsorbent sytem external mass transfer coefficients and internal diffusion rate constants were determined due to the initial herbicide concentration. Finally the thermodynamic parameters of adsorption were calculated by using thermodynamic equations for each system. Keywords: Water pollution, pesticide, 2,4-D, Metribuzin, adsorption, activated carbon, sugar beet pulp
