Recently, there has been much attention to George Eliot as a feminist writer, yet there are not many detailed studies concerning this aspect in her works. Criticsgenerally gave scattered critical views about how Eliot represented the right andposition of women in the late Victorian English society. These critical views aregenerally historical and sociological. This study also focuses on historical and sociological aspects of society interms of positions of women in the Victorian society because these aspects are closelylinked to individual lives in any society. However, this study, when compared withother studies, examines the issues of women in a different way in 1 he Mill on theFloss through the representation of Maggie Tulliver' s life. The difference is that thecurrent stt,idy deals with how culture and ideology play important roles in constructingMaggie's :female gender identity in the Victorian patriarchal society.en_US
