Abstract
Dr. Atilla MURATHAN Ill REMOVAL OF NICKEL IONS FROM WASTEWATER BY ADSORPTION (M. Sc. Thesis) Nefise Betül HIDIRO?LU GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY January 2003 ABSTRACT In recent years, due to improving technology and increasing population; the environmental pollution is reaching to serious sizes. The water takes the first place as a receiver area that the wastes are left. Thus, water pollution takes the big share in environmental pollution. Especially, presence of heavy metals in waste water makes a toxilogical effect rating to their concentrations on many living beings and causes to great hazard. In this respect, while struggling against water pollution, limit values of heavy metals permitted to be present in waste water were determined in the relevant legislation. The studies on taking heavy metal doses under these limit values are increasing day by day. One of the best methods on removal of heavy metals from waste water is the adsorption of heavy metals. In this study, adsorption of nickel which is a heavy metal that causes to toxilogical effect such as death when the concentration limit is passed over, was investigated in batch and continuous systems. Valonia acron, brownish sepiolite and clinoptilolite are used as adsorbent in the experiments. In the first part of the project; batch adsorption studies show that all of these adsorbents can be used toIV remove Ni (II) from wastewater. The experimental data could be fitted by the most widely used Langmuir isotherm model. In the second part; effects of concentration, flow rate and type of adsorbent were explored in packed column. It was observed that an increase in the initial concentration with constant flow rate, and in the flow rate with constant concentration resulted in a higher Ni(ll) uptake per unit weight of adsorbent. Results indicate that valonia acron is more effective than brownish sepiolit and clinoptilolit to remove nickel from wastewater.
