Abstract
In this study, the effects on wear behavior of the innovative quenching-partitioning heat treatment and the conventional quenching-partitioning heat treatment realized to 4140 medium carbon Cr-Mo steel samples were investigated. 8 samples for the Q-P heat treatment after austenitizing at approximately 885 oC, different initial quenching (250 and 280 oC), different partitioning temperatures (350 and 450 oC) and time (10 and 100 s) parameters were applied. After quenching treatment at room temperature by austenitizing at 885 oC, another sample was tempered at about 555 oC for 1 hour at room temperature. The changes in the friction coefficient along the sliding distance of the samples were recorded using the ball-on-disc method, which is the abrasive test method after the heat treatments. Besides friction coefficient values, the volumetric wear loss values were measured by determining the wear track profiles by profilometer analysis. In addition, the microstructure analysis of the heat treatment effects on the samples was performed using the optical microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Electron Distribution Spectrometry (EDS) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods and the hardness values of the samples were determined by Brinell Hardness method. In addition, the work-hardening properties of the heat treatments were evaluated by determining the Rockwell C hardness values of the wear surfaces. According to the results, it is determined that the hardness of QP3 sample which has the lowest volumetric wear loss value increases and the friction coefficient value decreases gradually. In consequence of the evaluation of wear surfaces, wear losses and work-hardening results, it was concluded that Q-P heat treatment generally has better wear properties than Q-T heat treatment.
