Abstract
NMR imaging (NMRI) is one of the most important imaging modalities in medical imaging. It has a lot of different imaging specialities from other modalities about imaging human body and it has been used all over the world for over thirty years.Although NMRI has large capabilities of imaging the human anatomy and physiology, for clinical diagnosis, in images obtained with conventional NMRI sequences, some tissues and tissue components can not be seen good enough because of having too short T2 times. In this thesis, NMR imaging with ultrashort echo time (UTE) which is a new method for imaging tissue and tissue components with short T2 times is investigated.Firstly, tissue and tissue components with short T2 are described. After that, basic UTE pulse sequence and its physics are explained. NMR imaging machine requirements for using UTE sequence are emphasized. Some of the methods which increase the image quality of the short T2 tissues and tissue components when used with UTE pulse sequence are divided into two groups and explained. In the obtained images, one method (subtraction of images which are obtained at two different echo time) from the first group which is used alone and one method (frequency-based fat saturation) from the second group which is combined with the chosen method in the first group, are used. The results from these images are given. In the last section, the clinical success of the UTE pulse sequence and future plans are evaluated and some suggestions are made.
